A widespread product recall has been issued across the UK after plastic fragments were discovered in a popular branded dog food, prompting urgent warnings to pet owners.
Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s have removed the affected item from shelves and are urging customers not to feed it to their pets following safety concerns.
Retailers Sound the Alarm
The recall centres on Lily’s Kitchen Pasta al Ragu with Beef, Oregano and Basil (400g cans), after the manufacturer confirmed that pieces of plastic may be present in certain batches. The contamination was identified during routine checks, triggering immediate action from the supermarkets involved.
A spokesperson for Tesco said the brand is recalling the product “because it may contain pieces of plastic,” adding that customers should not feed the product to their pets under any circumstances. Instead, shoppers are advised to return the item to stores for a full refund.
Morrisons echoed the warning, confirming that the brand owner had alerted them to the potential contamination. “If you have purchased this product, please don’t use it and return it to us for a full refund. We don’t need a receipt,” the supermarket said in its public notice.
Batch Details and Safety Advice
The affected cans carry the batch code 5212T9097F, with can numbers ranging from 27018 to 50268, and a best-before date of 31 July 2027. Customers who have purchased the product are urged to check the label immediately.
Lily’s Kitchen, the manufacturer, issued an apology to customers, stressing that the issue has been isolated and resolved. The company emphasised that no other products are affected by the recall.
“Do Not Feed to Your Pet” Warning Issued Nationwide
The discovery of plastic pieces has prompted a strong nationwide warning, with retailers and the manufacturer advising pet owners to stop using the product immediately. The recall has been widely circulated through supermarket websites, in-store notices and national media.
While no injuries or illnesses have been reported, experts warn that ingestion of plastic can pose serious risks to dogs, including choking, internal injury or digestive obstruction.
What Should Customers Do?
Shoppers who have purchased the affected dog food should:
- Stop feeding it to their pets immediately
- Return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund
- Contact Lily’s Kitchen for further information or reassurance
Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s have all confirmed that receipts are not required for refunds.
A Reminder of the Importance of Product Safety
This recall highlights the crucial role of quality control in the pet food industry and the swift action required when potential hazards are identified. With millions of UK households owning pets, supermarkets and manufacturers are under increasing pressure to maintain the highest safety standards.
For now, pet owners are urged to check their cupboards and ensure that any affected cans are returned promptly.
